Maya Ober | Design as Common Good

Maya Ober is a designer, researcher and educator. She holds a B.Des. in Industrial Design from the Holon Institute of Technology, and an MA in Design Research from the Berne University of the Arts. Maya Ober is a designer, researcher, educator, and the founding editor of depatriarchise design based in Basel, Switzerland. depatriarchise design is a non-profit design research platform, tackling the issues of design’s entanglement with systemic inequalities and was nominated to Swiss Design Awards in 2019. She works as research associate at the Institute of Industrial Design and as a lecturer at the Institute of Aesthetic Practice and Theory at the FHNW Academy of Art and Design in Basel, where she co-heads the internal continuing education programme “Educating Otherwise” directed at the lecturers of the HGK, that aims to bring intersectional practices into design education. Maya has a broad international teaching experience, having taught in Israel, Germany, Mexico, Switzerland, Sweden on both undergraduate and graduate level. She serves as an external MA advisor at the MFA in Visual Communication at Konstfack in Sweden. Her research interests intersect between critical design studies, intersectionality, feminist pedagogies and anthropology of design.
